Once we had been contemplating what color of the favored Donegal coat to do that yr, my first thought was that I needed it to be completely different to the gray, brown and charcoal we’d accomplished prior to now. It must be a special aesthetic, one thing readers may personal alongside a kind of others.

This biscuit model grew out of that. It’s a mid-brown color, which isn’t one thing we’ve accomplished earlier than, however extra considerably it appears like a special style, a special paradigm. That is an Ivy color, a preppy one, one thing that goes significantly effectively with gray flannel, blue denim and powerful color.

Most of us will probably be acquainted with the perspective that birthed Ivy style within the US – the playfulness, the blending of sportswear with tailoring, sweats with tweed and shorts with shirts. You might name it pupil laziness course, however it’s exhausting to argue with how influential that perspective has been inside American clothes ever since.

That is the Ivy model of our Donegal. It’s informal, pairing effectively with denims or sweatpants – however then it will also be dressed up, with gray flannels, a navy knit and brown-suede boots. Or plimsolls on the toes. Watch cap, felt hat or baseball cap on the top.

This biscuit color is kind of completely different in that respect to most of our earlier Donegals, which sat extra inside the city world of muted and chilly colors – good with neutrals, no heat within the browns or greens.

The photographs above are in fact one demonstration of that – the coat with blue denims, mid-grey knit, snuff-suede boots and inexperienced cap. The mid-grey Donegal is the one one that basically crosses over with this one by way of this model.

The inexperienced cap is a really Ivy color, and stands rather than many different color choices, resembling scarlet, yellow and pink. The shoot we did a number of years in the past for the polo coat with The Anthology has some good examples – that purple hat, inexperienced scarf and pink shirt would all work very properly with this too.

I really realised after I was carrying the inexperienced cap that it has one other Ivy relevance too – it’s an anniversary one from John Simons, that UK pioneer of Ivy model, referring to when the store was in Soho and known as the Village Gate. (Itself a reference, predictably given John, to the New York jazz membership of the identical identify.)

One different factor I significantly love about Donegal is the buttons. Earlier inventory variations had been too sober to make use of something apart from darkish buttons, however right here we had been ready to make use of my favorite ever button, the Tiger’s Eye.

I wrote earlier this yr about what makes a good horn button, and why Tiger’s Eye is probably the most lovely but in addition the costliest, as a result of it comes from simply the tip of the buffalo horn.

I needed to pay the additional to have them on this coat as a result of the swirls of brown and honey, with little flashes of white, choose up the colors of the Donegal fabric so fantastically.

The material right here is similar as we now have utilized in latest Donegals by the best way – 760g, woven within the UK, with the flecks of the Donegal yarn coming by means of distinctly however subtly. (Way more on the standard Donegal weaver here.)

As per regular, I needed to incorporate an outfit different to point out how the coat might be worn smarter as effectively – so above it’s mixed with a pair of mid-grey flannel trousers and a brown knit.

This smarter model pushes away from the Ivy colors, significantly with that darkish brown on high, however hopefully this simply illustrates its versatility. I’ve additionally accomplished the identical under with a cream watch cap and a navy baseball cap. Generally it’s very useful simply to see an image.

Measurement clever, I’m carrying a Giant right here relatively than the Medium I’ve worn prior to now (5 relatively than 4). This can be a results of each altering physique form and wanting a barely looser, extra relaxed match, however I feel if you wish to take into consideration which dimension you need, one of the best factor is to observe this video the place I evaluate the 2 sizes.

Strive to consider how the match appears to be like on me in these examples, and which you then need on your self.

There are another good suggestions in that video, together with the actual fact it’s best to attempt to ignore the sleeve and physique size, as a result of each these issues might be simply altered, given the inlay we offer. (It’s one factor that nobody appears to have copied but – I’m wondering why?).

The brand new color of the Donegal coat is on the market on the PS Shop now.

Individually, we now have additionally acquired a handful of liners for the donegal coats. These had been provided back in the spring as a pre-order possibility for readers who already had a donegal, and needed one thing to make them hotter for going into the winter.

Loads had been offered, however we had a bit materials left over so we made these into inventory. They are often seen on the shop here.

As talked about within the spring, these are quilted liners utilizing wool wadding – wool is more practical than artificial wadding and quite a bit inexpensive than down, so it’s an efficient alternative for one thing like this. The wool additionally retains a little bit of its pure lanolin odor from the oils, which is sweet.

The liners are offered with buttons that should be sewn into the coat by the shopper or an alterations tailor, one thing most different manufacturers would take into account too fussy for his or her clients, however we all know PS clients are completely different.

Donegal coat, fabric and make:

• The Donegal Overcoat was designed to be probably the most versatile coat potential for contemporary tailoring and life.
• It was made in Donegal tweed due to the pleasing however delicate texture. There’s slubbiness in there and color variation if you look fastidiously, however it by no means feels as old school as an enormous windowpane.
• The yarn is dyed, blended, carded and spun all by the identical mill in Donegal.
• The material is woven by Mallalieus, a small family-run mill in the course of the Pennines.
• It’s manufactured by Non-public White VC in Manchester.
• The pockets are lined with cashmere. I don’t perceive why anybody makes use of an artificial – it’s so chilly. And cashmere is an enormous step-up on regular cottons. It’s like placing on luxurious gloves each time you set your fingers in.

Design:

• Collar lifted up, barely increased on the physique, so it encircles the neck and covers the shirt and tie when buttoned. That is sensible, giving extra safety from the wind, but in addition flattering, because it makes the wearer look taller and broader throughout the shoulders.
• Extra importantly, the collar has a big crescent-shaped insert on the again, permitting it to remain up when popped. One thing overcoats usually miss out.
• Coat a few inches longer than most, so it drops just under the knee.
• Throat latch minimize to comply with the traces of the collar, and sweep away with angled ends.
• Two buttoned in-breast pockets, one newspaper pocket on the left hip.
• Buttoned straps on the wrists.

• The sleeves might be lengthened by round 4cm if required.
• And they are often shortened. Shortening by 1.5cm can be straightforward – greater than that might require the wrist strap to be moved, although that’s not a tough alteration.
